Snow moved into the Fraser Valley with force Sunday, and is expected to last into Monday morning to cap off a very busy and dangerous weekend for southern B.C.

Road conditions throughout much of the province are still poor, with ICBC reporting more than 9,000 calls over the last few days. Police are asking drivers to avoid Highway 1 between Chilliwack and Abbotsford, if possible.

The City of Chilliwack woke up to 35 centimetres of snow Sunday morning. City crews worked around the clock to keep roads as clear as possible.

“We’ve had crews on 12-hour shifts, every piece of equipment out on the road, 24 hours a day,” Glen MacPherson of the City of Chilliwack said.

Another five to 10 centimetres are expected to fall overnight Sunday, with snow finally tapering off Monday morning.

MacPherson said the city is urging citizens to clear their own sidewalks due to the city not having enough resources. He also warned about the dangers of driving in these conditions, especially at night.

“After dark, don’t go out, don’t risk it,” he said. “Just think twice about driving. We’ve seen a lot of accidents.”

Parts of Vancouver Island were also hit with snow this weekend. Five to 10 centimetres of snow fell on Sunday morning. Environment Canada called off its snowfall warning for the island early Sunday afternoon.

Snow has tapered off in Metro Vancouver after officials were forced to close the Alex Fraser Bridge for much of Saturday due to falling ice.

Simon Fraser University said its Burnaby campus was closed Sunday morning, but would be open for 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. exams. All campuses were able to remain open for exams throughout the rest of the day and into the evening, and even offered free parking to students.

The school faced harsh criticism Saturday for waiting until 2 p.m. to cancel afternoon and evening exams. Many students were stuck in long bus lineups after exams were scheduled then cancelled due to weather for the third day in a row.
