A Grande Prairie man was handed a 20-year prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with a man’s stabbing death in Edmonton.
Justin Kenneth Sandquist, 26, was sentenced Wednesday for killing 25-year-old Aaron Cote in 2013. Sandquist was originally charged with first-degree murder in Cote’s death but later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Cote died in December 2013 from stab wounds he suffered in the Travelodge parking lot near Gateway Boulevard and 45 Avenue.

After Cote’s death, a Canada-wide warrant was issued for Sandquist’s arrest. He turned himself into police in Vancouver less than two weeks later.
Sandquist is set to appear in court on Dec. 15, facing charges in relation to a drug investigation in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer earlier this year. Sandquist was out on bail for the Edmonton homicide at the time.
