Calgary traffic: new Memorial Drive lane reversal begins Monday

A new lane reversal system on Memorial Drive N.E. begins on Monday, Dec. 5, 2016. Global News

Drivers who use Memorial Drive as part of their normal commute will notice some changes around Edmonton Trail.

Starting on Monday, drivers heading into the downtown core will be able to use two left turn lanes from westbound Memorial Drive N.E. onto the Langevin Bridge between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on weekdays.

Then at 9 a.m. a lane reversal takes place, allowing for dual left turns from eastbound Memorial Drive N.E. onto northbound Edmonton Trail N.E. as drivers head out of the downtown core.

The reversal will be controlled with temporary signage. Automated lane reversal signs will then be installed next year.

The change is expected to improve the flow of traffic, with the City of Calgary estimating it will allow for an additional 400 vehicles per hour to enter the downtown core from Memorial Drive.
