Woman killed in crash involving Whitecourt fire truck en route to blaze

The RCMP said it is investigating after a 33-year-old woman was killed when her SUV collided with a fire truck in Whitecourt, Alta., early Friday morning.

Police said officers were called to a crash at Dahl Drive and Highway 43 at about 6 a.m.

According to the Mounties, a Whitecourt Municipal Fire Rescue Tanker was en route to a structure fire when it collided with an SUV at the intersection.

They said witnesses told them the fire truck’s emergency lights were on at the time of the crash.

The RCMP said the woman in the SUV – the lone occupant of the vehicle – was pronounced dead at the scene. The two people inside the fire truck were not injured.

Traffic was being rerouted at the intersection as police investigated. They said traffic would likely be disrupted for several hours.

According to the RCMP, another fire crew was able to get to the blaze that the tanker involved in the crash was originally headed to. The fire was at a mobile home. Police said the home was a “total loss” but that no injuries were reported.
