Provincial Health Minister Gaétan Barrette announced Quebec will invest $20 million annually to re-open 18 existing operating rooms in nine hospital networks.
At a press conference at the Jewish General Hospital Monday afternoon, Barrette said the aim of reopening operating rooms is to reduce wait times.
This will allow up to 22,444 more operations to be carried out each year but conditions apply.
To access the funds hospital networks must balance their operating room budgets.
However, Barrette did not say how long hospitals will have to get their books in order.
Each hospital network could have access to $1.2 million to reopen equipped operating rooms, Barrette said.
