QE2 reopens following fatal crash

Part of the Queen Elizabeth II Highway was shut down for several hours Monday night after a fatal crash.

The collision happened in the northbound lanes of Highway 2 and Highway 597 near Blackfalds.

RCMP say a black Nissan was travelling south when it attempted to pass a cement truck from the merging lane. The Nissan then crossed the road and median into the northbound lanes where it was struck by a Honda. The driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene.

STARS air ambulance crews from both Edmonton and Calgary responded to the crash site.

Emergency crews confirm to Global News they transported a 30-year-old man to University of Alberta Hospital and a 58-year-old man to Calgary’s Foothills Hospital.

No names have been released.

RCMP say alcohol may have been a factor in the collision but it remains under investigation.
