‘We’ve waited too long’: Flood cleanup continues in Calgary community, but who’s footing the bill?

It’s been three years since flood waters struck southern Alberta and the cleanup is still not over.

On Saturday, people from the community of Roxboro gathered to pick up branches and clean up Elbow Island.

It was one of the hardest hit areas in the city.

Community members say this is now the second clean-up they have paid for.

They’re now hoping they can receive some financial support from the city.

“I think this is the direct responsibility of the city,” James Maxim with the Rideau Roxboro Community Association said. “We’re willing to help as citizens but we’ve been waiting too long for it to be cleaned up, so we’ve undertaken it.

“We’ll pay for this event today, but at the same time I don’t want it to be seen as a precedent.”

The community association said it’s supposed to meet with its councilor within the next few days.
