Man who pushed for asbestos registry for Saskatchewan public buildings dies

SASKATOON – A Saskatchewan man who urged the province to make lists available to everyone of public buildings that contain asbestos is dead.

The family of Howard Willems says he died peacefully after a long battle with an asbestos-related cancer.

Willems worked as a building inspector for 31 years and had a rare form of cancer that comes from inhaling asbestos fibres.

Last week he said in media interviews that people should know if they’re going into buildings that have asbestos – especially if there is construction work.

Willems spoke out as the Opposition NDP introduced a private member’s bill in the Saskatchewan legislature which would require that details about asbestos containment in public buildings be listed online.

Willems’ stepson, Jesse Todd, says his stepfather hoped talking about the issue would bring change.
