Maybe it was the somewhat grandiose tone of House Speaker Paul Ryan’s statement on Tuesday.

Perhaps it was the fact that president-elect Donald Trump has already drawn comparisons to a certain intergalactic tyrant.

Or maybe it was simply the use of a word that started with “republic.”

Whatever it was, the opening line of Ryan’s speech to reporters gathered in Washington (“welcome to the dawn of a new unified Republican government”) had barely passed his lips when the Internet went full Star Wars.

Galactic Senate, anyone?

And then came a barrage of references to the Death Star, the evil Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader himself. You know, just in case the point wasn’t getting across.

Ryan’s comments on Tuesday came as he tried to win over House Republicans to keep his job in the upcoming Congress. He succeeded, in spite of angry words exchanged with Trump during the campaign.

Trump himself was meeting with vice president-elect Mike Pence in New York Tuesday to discuss key appointments to his Cabinet.

“In the days and weeks ahead, we will be working very closely with president-elect and his transition team to layout our ambitious path for 2017,” Ryan said.

“We want to make sure that we hit the ground running in January so we can deliver on the new president’s agenda. A better way, better days lie ahead for our country.”
