Wind warnings finally lifted for southern Alberta

Environment Canada dropped a number of wind warnings that had been in place across southwestern Alberta Monday evening.

The warning, issued by Environment Canada on Saturday, cautioned there would be potentially damaging westerly winds with gusts between 90 and 130 km/h.

“Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.”

As of 3:35 p.m. MT on Monday the warning covered the following areas:

  • Lethbridge
  • Taber
  • Milk River
  • Okotoks
  • High River
  • Claresholm

The warnings were finally lifted shortly after 6 p.m. Monday evening.

According to Environment Canada, winds will continue to spread eastwards across southern Alberta on Monday before weakening in the evening.

The following areas reported unofficial peak wind gusts for Saturday:

Nakiska Ridgetop: 154 km/h

Waterton  Park Gate: 81 km/h

Pincher Creek Airport: 78 km/h

Lethbridge Airport: 73 km/h
