A rash of racist attacks and hate crimes have been reported throughout the U.S. less than 48 hours after Donald Trump won the presidency.
Police in San Diego are investigating after a San Diego State University student was allegedly robbed while walking to her vehicle. The two suspects also allegedly stole her car and made comments about Trump and the Muslim community.
Police said in a statement the two suspects, a white male and a Hispanic male, confronted her and grabbed her purse and backpack. The victim fled the area to call police only to return to find her vehicle missing. Police said officers are treating this as a hate crime.
The University’s student association said the black, Muslim student was wearing a hijab and full Islamic garb at the time of the assault.
In New York State, the words “Make America White Again” was spray painted on a dugout at a baseball field in Wellsville. A large swastika was also painted on the dugout.
According to the Buffalo News, a black doll was found in an elevator at dorm at Canisius College with a noose around its neck.
According to USA Today, a Muslim student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette was assaulted several times by two white males while the suspects were yelling racial slurs. The student reportedly told police the suspects took her hijab and robbed her of her wallet before fleeing the scene. One of the suspects was said to have been wearing a hat with “Trump” written on it.
However, police told USA Today that “the victim describes the suspects as white males, but has not given a definitive clothing description.”
In Philadelphia, police responded to a building in the southern part of the city after two swastikas were spray painted on a street level window display, the Philly Voice reported.
One of the swastikas was used to replace the letter T in the spelling of “Trump” that was also painted on the windows, according to the Philly Voice.
The words “Sieg Heil” was painted under the second Nazi symbol.
A day after the election was called, thousands of people across the U.S. protested Trump’s victory, marching in streets in cities across America.
From New England to heartland cities like Kansas City and along the west coast, demonstrators carried flags and effigies of the president-elect, disrupting traffic and declaring that they refused to accept Trump’s victory.
Flames lit up the night sky in California cities Wednesday as thousands of protesters burned a giant papier-mache Trump head in Los Angeles and started fires in Oakland intersections.
Los Angeles demonstrators also beat a Trump piñata and sprayed the Los Angeles Times building and news vans with anti-Trump profanity.
Leading up to the election, polls in the U.S. had generally placed Clinton slightly ahead of Trump.
