The City of Fredericton is installing crosswalk lights on the high-traffic Woodstock Road in an area where two elderly men were killed earlier this year.
Laurie Menzies and Lawrence Swazey were killed in May when they were struck by a SUV while crossing the road.
Police say the men weren’t in a crosswalk at the time.
The city says the two men’s deaths were a factor when deciding to install the crosswalk on the busy street.
“There was the fatality there, as well we were expecting quite an increase in pedestrian traffic in the area with the opening of the new splash pad,” said traffic engineer John Lewis.
“We had looked at it over the summer, we evaluated the entire corridor … and determined the crosswalk there at Woodstock and Brookmount should be upgraded to a pedestrian-activated flashing light system.”
The crosswalk lights, which are expected to be up and running in a couple of weeks, will be in front of the Delta Fredericton hotel.
