Dryden Eagles celebrate high school football championship

WINNIPEG – The Dryden Eagles celebrated a championship victory on Wednesday to finish off a perfect season.

The Eagles defeated the Portage Trojans 21-0 to win the Canad Inns Bowl for the division three championship at Investors Group Field. After going 7-0 in the regular season the Eagles won all three of their playoff games to grab just their third Winnipeg High School Football League championship. Their last football title came in 2006.

In the fourth tier title game the Kildonan East Reivers captured the school’s first ever football championship. They defeated the St. John’s Tigers by a field goal 35-32.

The Vincent Massey Trojans won the Junior Varsity championship. The Trojans capped off a perfect season by defeating the Oak Park Raiders 57-14 in a blowout. It’s the Trojans third junior varsity title in the last four years. Vincent Massey won all seven games in 2016, regular season and playoffs included.

The ANAVETS Bowl for the division one championship and the division two title game will both be played on Thursday at Investors Group Field. The Trojans will attempt to win back to back championships in a rematch of last year’s final against the St. Paul’s Crusaders. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 pm. The Crusaders are a perfect 9-0 in 2016 and that included a 21-20 win over Vincent Massey way back in week one.

The division two final pits the Kelvin Clippers against the Steinbach Sabres beginning at 5:00 pm.
