One person is dead and three people were taken to hospital after a fire destroyed a home in the northeast community of Coventry Hills at around 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

The two-alarm blaze happened in the 100 block of Coverton Heights NW.

Three people made it out on their own and were taken to hospital. Calgary EMS said a man suffered serious, potentially life-threatening burns and smoke inhalation, but was stable on the way to hospital. Two women suffered minor injuries.

At around 12:30 p.m., fire officials confirmed that a body of a man had been pulled from the home.

Neighbours in the area were woken up by the blaze.

“Literally in five or ten minutes – the whole thing went up. You could see flames shooting through the upstairs window, you could hear the glass breaking and yeah, it all happened really, really fast,” Blake Sawatske, a neighbour, said.

Neighbour Maureen Briggs lives next door to the house that went up in flames, her home was also damaged by the fire.

“We saw smoke and flames,” Briggs said. “I came down and saw the neighbours on the grass across from the house.”

Calgary Fire Battalion Chief Paul LeBlanc told Global News the home was engulfed in flames, forcing crews to take a defensive stance.

LeBlanc said one house was destroyed and an adjacent one had minor damage to the siding.

Fire crews will be on scene for the day to monitor hot spots.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family by neighbours in the community.
