Father John Walsh

Father John Walsh is a Montreal-area priest that some have dubbed the city’s favourite priest.

In 2006, Walsh co-founded the Father’s Day Procure Walk of Courage to raise money for the fight against prostate cancer.

The walk is only one of many community events Father John is a part of.

He was ordained in 1966 and in May celebrated 50 years of service.

Father John marked the occasion with the release of his autobiography, called God is Calling, Don’t Leave him on Hold.

The book is a battle cry for the church to become subversive and to build itself up from the bottom instead of following the top-down hierarchical approach.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Father John dropped by Focus Montreal to discuss his new book.

Je Me Souviens: Vimy 100

Remembrance Day celebrations are coming up to honour and remember the many sacrifices of Canadian veterans. Remembrance Day also marks the date and time when the First World War came to an end, when armies stopped fighting on Nov. 11,  1918, at 11 a.m.

The First World War also saw the Battle of Vimy Ridge. It is Canada’s most celebrated military victory but it came at a heavy cost, with more than 10,500 Canadian soldiers wounded or killed.

In 2017, Canada will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the famous assault.

Today, an iconic white memorial sits atop the ridge commemorating the battle.

Photographer Racheal McCaig’s photo exhibit Je Me Souviens: Vimy 100 pays tribute to our country’s sacrifices.

Her photo depiction of the monument landed her a coveted invitation — she will be among the delegation of Canadians attending a special tribute in France next April.

McCaig joined senior anchor Jamie Orchard to talk about the exhibit and her role as a Canadian representative for Vimy Ridge celebrations in France.

Roxann Whitebean was nominated by a viewer for her strength, her courage and her commitment to telling her cancer story to help others who are going through the same pain.

Last year she documented her battle with breast cancer for a series on CBC Docs.

In a candid interview, Whitbean discusses not only her documentary Thunder Blanket but shares the story of  why she made her first film which takes a look at the 1990 Oka crisis through the eyes of a child.

There are so many Great Montrealers around us. If you know someone who should be profiled as part of Global News’ Greater Montreal campaign, don’t forget to nominate them!
