Winnipeg man facing charges of taking his kids to Mexico brought back to Canada

WINNIPEG – A Winnipeg man has been extradited from Mexico on charges of abducting his children and hiding them for four years.

Kevin Maryk, 41, was brought back to the Manitoba capital Thursday, some five months after he was arrested by Mexican police. He is being detained in custody on two counts of abduction and two counts of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.

“Being extradited from one country to another is not a simple task,” Winnipeg police Patrol Sgt. Monica Stothers said Friday.

“There’s different levels of government and law enforcement that’s involved in it.”

Police allege Maryk took his children from his ex-wife during a court-ordered visit on Aug. 16, 2008 and fled Canada. The kids, Dominic and Abby Maryk, were seven and six at the time.

Maryk lived for a while in Peurto Vallarta, Mexico and then Guadalajara, police said, keeping the kids indoors during the day and preventing them from going to school.

Investigators got a break in the case last May, when a neighbour in Guadalajara recognized the children in a Crimestoppers video that aired in Mexico and called authorities. The kids were brought back to their mother in Winnipeg.

Police have also charged three other people in the case. Robert Groen, 41, was arrested in Mexico on conspiracy charges. Darlene McKay, 53, and Bradley McKay, 48, who are relatives of Maryk, have been charged with obstruction of justice.

Police are still searching for the Maryk’s nephew, Cody McKay, 23. He is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.
