There are different types of sugar that can be found in foods and it can be difficult to determine if what you are consuming is good or bad.

Natural sugar is something that can be found in foods like fruits and vegetables.

Added sugar is added to processed foods, like candy, by manufacturers.

Clinical and sports nutritionist Claudine Larivière points out consuming added sugar is not ideal – but that doesn’t mean you have to restrict yourself completely.

“It’s more the sources and the forms of sugar that you’re going to consume.”

The recommended maximum dosage for adults is about six teaspoons of added sugar per day, according to Larivière.

Larivière noted foods that are less processed will have less added sugar.

To know how much sugar is in your food, Larivière says check the ingredients list on the packaging and look for products that have less than five to 10 grams of added sugar per serving.
