Sylvan Lake RCMP said a westbound Chevrolet Uplander van failed to yield at a sign and was struck by a northbound school bus Friday afternoon.

The crash happened just before 3:42 p.m. at the rural intersection of Township Road 370 and Range Road 32 in the County of Red Deer.

RCMP said the school bus hit the driver’s side of the van, which ended up on its side in a ditch which was partially filled with water.

The driver of the van was pulled out by the fire department and was taken to hospital. His injuries were not disclosed, but RCMP said they were not life-threatening.

There were two young passengers in the van that suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital for assessment, RCMP said.

There were 12 children on the school bus, which was operated by Prairie Bus Lines. They were on their way home from Spruce View School. All of the children – who range in age from five to 16 – were assessed by paramedics on scene and released with no injuries.
