The last presidential debate of the 2016 U.S. election got off to a chilly start, with the two candidates walking onto the stage and hardly making eye contact — let alone shaking hands — before taking their places at the podiums.
Although Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton started off calmly, once the topic of immigration was brought up, things started to get heated.
Trump on deportation
Trump reiterated his support for a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, and said he wanted to kick out many people who have entered the country illegally, calling them criminals — and not just criminals.
“We have some bad hombres here and we’re going to get them out.”

Clinton on Putin and puppets
During the section on immigration, the subject of Clinton’s leaked campaign emails came up. She said that Russian hackers were behind the leaks, and pivoted to say that Russian president Vladimir Putin supported Trump.
“I don’t know Putin. He said nice things about me, that would be good,” replied Trump, before saying that Putin doesn’t like Clinton, and that’s a problem.
“That’s because he’d rather have a puppet as president,” said Clinton.
“You’re the puppet!” Trump interjected.

Clinton on American jobs
Trump talked about how trade policies enacted by Bill Clinton and Barack Obama have “sucked” American jobs out of the country.
“There’s only one of us on this stage who’s actually shipped jobs to Mexico. That’s Donald,” replied Clinton.
“He goes around with crocodile tears talking about how bad it is, but he’s given jobs to Chinese steel workers and not American steel workers.”

Clinton on Trump’s resume
Clinton contrasted her experience as secretary of state and other public roles with Trump’s experience as a business person and reality television star.
“In the 1980s, I was working to reform the schools in Arkansas. He was borrowing $14 million from his father to start his businesses,” she said.
“On the day when I was in the Situation Room monitoring the raid that brought Osama bin Laden to justice, he was hosting the Celebrity Apprentice.”
Trump on the media
Debate moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump whether he would accept the results of the election, given his comments about the election being rigged.
“I will look at it at the time,” replied Trump, explaining that he wanted to wait and see what happened on Nov. 8. The electoral system is rigged and the media especially is against him, he said.
“They’ve poisoned the minds of the voters. Unfortunately for them, I think the voters are seeing through it.”

Clinton on election results
Clinton said she disagreed strongly with Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the election.
Every time Trump doesn’t get what he wants, he says the system is rigged, she said.
“There was even a time when he didn’t get an Emmy for his TV program three years in a row and he started tweeting that the Emmys were rigged against him.”
“Should have gotten it,” replied Trump, to audience laughter.
Trump on nasty women
This doesn’t really qualify as a great one-liner, but is worth noting as a standout moment of the debate.
As Clinton talked about changes to social security, as an aside, she said that she and Trump – if he couldn’t find a way out of it, would end up paying more social security on payroll.
“Such a nasty woman,” muttered Trump.
