New Okanagan jail tours booked solid

Most people want to stay out of jail, but it appears thousands of Okanagan residents want to get in jail.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Justice advertised that it would be offering tours of the brand new correctional centre north of Oliver.

The ministry says interest was so high, it added more dates and so far 3,000 people have booked a tour.

It says it will no longer be accepting requests for tours and admits public interest has exceeded expectations.

The $200 million facility is being built on land owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band. It includes 378 cells, each able to accommodate two inmates.

It’s expected to open by early next year and will create 300 jobs.
