A 64-year-old homeowner east of Edmonton was shot during an attempted early morning home invasion that RCMP said was not random.

Mounties in Vermilion, Alta., said several unknown suspects tried to break into a rural residence around 4:30 a.m.Tuesday, but were not successful.

A confrontation occurred and the homeowner, also the sole person in the home, suffered a gunshot wound. He was taken by EMS to hospital in serious, but non-life-threatening condition.

The suspects fled in a vehicle after the confrontation. Neighbouring RCMP detachments helped to patrol the area, but the suspects were not found. Forensic investigators from Edmonton were also sent to help with the investigation.

Police said they do not believe there is any danger to the general public, and additional details will not be released.

Vermilion is about 190 kilometres east of Edmonton.
