NAIT receives $34.9M in federal funding for new centre

The federal government has committed $34.9 million for a new building at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

The money will go to a new centre the institution said will create modern and innovative training and research opportunities for students and industry to develop, test and commercialize new technologies and products.

“Encouraging scientific awareness in Alberta and across Canada depends on supporting our world-class scientists and researchers,” federal Infrastructure Minister Amarjeet Sohi said.

“Investments like this can help make our country among the world’s leading nations in the development and use of clean and sustainable technologies and processes, while also creating well-paying jobs for Canadians.”

The funding will come from the federal government’s Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund. NAIT will investigate $45 million towards the building.

The Productivity and Innovation Centre will include manufacturing labs, development of acceleration and incubation space that will be used as business prototypes and additional space for research.

“The Productivity and Innovation Centre will be the place industry comes for solutions and to succeed. It will support industry in becoming more productive and innovative. It will provide a foundation for future prosperity,” NAIT president Dr. Glenn Feltham said.

The Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund will provide up to $2 billion over the next two years to infrastructure projects at post-secondary institutions across Canada.
