The group spearheading the fundraising to build the rail trail between Coldstream and Kelowna is hoping a donation matching program will get them $1-million dollars closer to their goal.
The fundraising initiative announced that until October 31 seven anonymous donors will be matching the donations that come in up to $500,000.
If $500,000 is raised, with the donation matching, that would more than double the amount raised to date. So far approximately $850,000 has been raise towards the project.
The total cost of the trail is expected to be $7.86-million. The rail trail fundraisers have broken that down into smaller goals. The $500,000 first phase has been fully funded and now fundraisers are working towards the $2-million second phase. That money will be for design work, environmental analysis and rock scaling.
“This matching campaign is fantastic to help us fund that second target so that we can begin construction in the spring,” said trail ambassador Brad Clements.
How quickly the trail is finished will depend on how fast the money is raised.
Clements believes it could be funded by the fall of 2017.
