Beaconsfield takes second crack at developing Esso site

For the second time, Beaconsfield is pondering changes to the zoning of a controversial plot of land that was last home to an old Esso station.

The area, whose address is 100 Beaurepaire, was up for rezoning earlier this year to clear the way for a residential complex.

Residents effectively blocked rezoning when almost 200 of them signed a registry in March. Now, Beaconsfield is presenting an altered plan.

The new plan would call for 18 townhouses, each two storeys high, within four buildings. The proposal would see four units less than the previous plan. The plan would also call for an offset of green space in the southwest part of the plot.

Some residents are in favour of the new plan, some not so much.

“Especially when the [Beaurepaire Village] shopping centre closes,” said Peter Hendrickson, a resident. “It’s chaos there.”

But some residents said the changes work and could mean than an ugly plot could become something that could be an asset to the West Island city.

“I look at it as a positive thing for most of the immediate area,” Ed McDuff said.

A vote on rezoning the plot for the project is scheduled next month.
