Weekend water main break leads to traffic detours along Edmonton’s busy Jasper Avenue

Commuters who use Jasper Avenue can expect some major delays this week. Global News

If Jasper Avenue is part of your route to work Monday, you’ll want to take note of the following detour: Jasper Avenue between 95-95A street will be down to one lane in each direction starting at 6 a.m.

The street was initially closed Saturday evening after a water main break.

“One of our contractors struck a water line- obviously caused a water flow which flooded the street so we’ve had to close Jasper Avenue,” Dean Heuman with TransEd said.

Epcor officials were on scene within 20 minutes and were able to stop the water flow.

Nearby homes and businesses were not affected.

The roadway was expected to reopen to a single lane in each direction by Wednesday.

“We’re hoping to do it fast and obviously our guys are busy at work making sure that’s going to happen,” Heuman said.

The city is urging drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area, but if you have to travel nearby you’re being urged to use 97 St. Or 101, 102 or 103 Avenues as alternates.

Construction crews are currently working in the area moving underground utilities in preparation for the new Valley Line LRT which will be traveling under 102 Avenue.

“We’re checking into what actually did happen and why the line was struck,” Heuman said. “We won’t have those details for a while but Epcor is doing the fix right now – we’re getting a good sense of what’s actually down there – so we should have more information later this week.”

Jasper Avenue will remain open with one lane in each direction until approximately October 31, when it’s expected the work will be completed.
