For Calgarians looking to get started on fall yard cleanup, the city is running its annual leaf and pumpkin composting program from Saturday, Sept. 24 until Sunday, Nov. 6.

“Calgarians help keep over two million kilograms of leaves and pumpkins out of landfills each fall,” waste and recycling services superintendent Darcy Cairns said in a release on Friday. “It’s great that we can work together to turn them into nutrient-rich compost instead.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

There are 35 drop off locations throughout the city. Click here for the list of locations.

The city also released suggestions of how best to use the program:

  • Use paper yard waste bags instead of plastic bags to be more environmentally friendly. Look for them in the same aisle as garbage bags at most grocery, hardware and garden retailers
  • The program is for residential use only
  • Leaves and pumpkins are the only materials accepted (no rocks, branches, soil or sod)
