Point Pause Proceed

St. Albert RCMP is highlighting the Point Pause Proceed campaign, which offers safety tips to pedestrians, including making sure eye contact is made with the driver of the vehicle before you step out onto the street.

Point – Always use a crosswalk or the closest intersection; Point in the direction you are travelling.

Pause – Never assume the motorist sees you; Pause. Look both ways and do not leave the curb until all vehicles come to a complete stop. Don’t assume vehicles will stop. Don’t just look at the vehicle, look at the driver. Look across all lanes you must cross and visually clear each lane before proceeding. Even if one motorist stops, do not presume drivers in other lanes can see you and will stop for you.

Proceed – When it is safe, proceed across the street. Keep your arm extended and watch for traffic in both directions.  Avoid distractions like texting, using your mobile device or wearing headphones.
