The RCMP said a man in his mid-20s has been charged with speeding after the motorcycle he was riding was caught going more than double the speed limit on a highway west of Edmonton Monday night.

According to police, the motorcyclist was pulled over east of Spruce Grove on Highway 16 around 11:30 p.m. after radar showed he was travelling at 215 km/h when the posted speed limit is 100 km/h.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Cst. Mike Hibbs, with the RCMP’s Capital West Integrated Traffic Unit, said – adding it wasn’t just the speed that astonished him but the fact the driver was speeding so excessively in the dark.

Hibbs said he was heading toward Edmonton at the end of his shift when he came across the motorcycle and said the rider was cooperative when he was pulled over.

Because the motorcycle was caught going 50 km/h over the speed limit, the driver was also issued a mandatory summons to appear in court where he could face fines or a licence suspension.

The motorcyclist, who RCMP said is from Spruce Grove, is scheduled to appear in court in Stony Plain on Nov. 24.
