Charges laid after man dies when truck collides with dirt bike on Alberta First Nation

A 30-year-old man is facing several charges including impaired driving after a fatal collision between a pick-up truck and a dirt bike in Maskwacis Sunday morning.

One man was killed and two other people were injured.

RCMP said the collision happened at 4:20 a.m. on the east side of the Samson Cree Nation on Highway 611.

Mounties said an 18-year-old man who was a passenger on the dirt bike died at the scene. The 19-year old woman driving the dirt bike was flown by STARS Air Ambulance to a hospital in Edmonton in stable condition.

The man driving the truck was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, RCMP said.

The collision is being investigated and all possible factors are being considered.

Chadwick Buffalo, 30, of Samson First Nation has been charged with six criminal code charges as follows:

  • Refusal to provide a blood sample
  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death
  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm
  • Assault

Buffalo will remain in custody until his scheduled court appearance in Wetaskiwin on September 1, 2016 at 9:30 a.m.

The names of those involved were not released. Officers were in the process of contacting their next of kin.

Samson Cree Nation is about 90 kilometres south of Edmonton.
