Community rallies together after Ross Street Sikh Temple fire

A wedding scheduled for the Ross Street Temple was relocated to Fraserview Hall.

One day after a fire caused extensive damage to the Ross Street Sikh Temple, organizers of events scheduled for the Vancouver gurdwara were forced to make alternate plans.

The community came together following the blaze with temples and other venues offering their space to those forced out by the fire damage.

One couple that were supposed to get married at the temple relocated their wedding to Vancouver’s Fraserview Hall at the last minute.  The bride and groom tied the knot after the wedding party raced to ready the venue for hundreds of guests.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Families on both sides are feeling a lot of joy on how everything has come together in a matter of hours,” Kesar Nagra, the bride’s uncle, said.

“They are happy with the venue and the final product at the end of the day.”

Fire broke out early Friday morning on the second floor of the temple, which recently spent $1 million on renovations.

It’s not clear how much the repairs will cost but fire officials said the structure is still sound.
