An Edmonton man has been charged after police said a weekend crash southeast of Westlock turned into a violent confrontation that sent him and another man to hospital.
RCMP said officers were called to Township Road 594 and Range Road 261 at about 1 a.m. Sunday but did not say what they were called about. RCMP said the officers found a man close to a van and he was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
According to police, once officers arrived at the hospital, they were told another man had been admitted to hospital for a serious but non-life threatening injury and investigated a possible connection between the two men’s injuries.
Mounties said the officers determined a crash between a pickup truck and a van had occurred and that the drivers got into a fight during which one of the men was attacked with a weapon. They said the driver of the van was alone while the driver of the truck had three passengers with him who were not hurt in the incident.
Police did not say whether the injuries suffered by the two drivers were a result of the fight or the crash.
A 51-year-old Edmonton man, whom police did not identify by name, has been charged with assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm. Police did not say whether the accused was the driver of the van or the truck.
He has been released on his own recognizance but his release is subject to several conditions. He is scheduled to make a court appearance in Westlock Provincial Court on Oct. 26.
Westlock RCMP continue to investigate the incident.
