WINNIPEG – One person was taken to hospital as a “precautionary measure” after a small explosion at the law courts on York Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

Winnipeg police and the bomb unit were on scene for several hours.

A Global News camera operator was on scene at the time said he smelled smoke in the air and started to look for the source. A bag laying on the sidewalk was on fire and then exploded. Seconds later security ran over with a fire extinguisher.

The courthouse was evacuated for several hours while police searched the area.

Global News talk with Shauna Curtin, the assistant deputy minister in the courts division of Manitoba Justice. She said staff were asked to look around their areas for anything suspicious.
