WINNIPEG — The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says the RCMP officer who backed off from a high-speed pursuit, which ended in a fatal crash did nothing wrong.
Taylor Renwick, 20, was on her way home to Winnipeg from Melita, Man., last fall when she died in a head-on collision on Highway 2, just two kilometers east of Ste. Claude.
She was hit by an alleged drunk driver who was being pursued by RCMP Oct. 9, 2015. The officer eventually backed off before the crash because of excessive speeds.

The IIU was asked to investigate and after reviewing recordings from the police vehicle and video surveillance footage from the gas station in Ste. Claude where the pursuit began, it concluded the officer acted appropriately.
The investigator found “the driver of the van was intent on fleeing from police and moved into oncoming traffic when it was unsafe to do so. He also concluded the officer driving the police vehilce was justified in beginning a pursuit and that he acted carefully and prudently during the course of the brief pursuit and in his decision to abort the case.”
