A man was taken to hospital with serious injuries after he and three others jumped off a moving GO Transit train Sunday evening, transit officials said.
The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. on an Oshawa-bound train approaching Danforth station.
Metrolinx spokesperson Anne Marie Aikins said a man forced open one of the train doors and jumped off. As the train was coming to a halt, three other people jumped out to assist.
The man was rushed to hospital in serious but non-life threatening condition.
Aikins said Metrolinx are looking into how and why the doors were pried open in what the agency has called an extremely dangerous and “stupid” stunt.
“We take it very, very seriously,” Aikins said, adding staff still need to review witness and crew interviews.
“Any time something like this happens, a full investigation is done by our transit safety department.”
Metrolinx is also reviewing the onboard computer to determine the exact time the doors were opened, the train’s speed and the post-incident response.
Aikins added the trains have built-in safeties to prevent the doors from opening.
“If somehow the door gets open then our crew are notified immediately and a system goes in place so it prevents the train from accelerating,” she said.
She also said each train coach has a covered emergency door release.
