WATCH ABOVE: A traumatic crash involving horses just outside of Calgary this weekend left one animal dead and another without a home. As Jill Croteau reports, the desperate hunt is on to find its owners – Aug 21, 2016

Emergency crews were called to the scene of a traumatic crash involving a horse hit by a vehicle at around midnight Friday.

A pair of horses were walking along the shoulder of Highway 2 near the Okotoks overpass.

A mare blindly galloped into oncoming traffic, got hit and died instantly.

The second horse, a gelding, was wandering with the mare that was killed in the crash.

He survived and has been affectionately named Lucky.

It’s not his real name but it’s an appropriate moniker for the seemingly orphaned gelding.

The first responders contacted the horse transport and bereavement services ‘Just Passing’. The owners of the business are now caring for the surviving horse.

Co-owner Carole Leroux is desperate to return the horse to his home. They’ve posted a plea on social media for anybody who recognizes the horse.

“You bond with them and you miss them they’re your partner. We want to get this guy back he’s probably missing them,” Leroux said.

A Good Samaritan who came upon the collision scene was in the right place at the right time. Lynn Fleury is a farrier by trade and pulled over once she saw horses were involved.

“The horses ran across the highway from the west and people stopped to help as they were getting out to catch the horses one of them got hit,” Fleury said.

Fleury says she stayed on the side of the road with the surviving horse until he was picked up by Greg Alexander.

“I happened to have a halter and stayed with him to keep him calm.  He was well-behaved. Others would panic and he stood with me,” Fleury said.

Everyone who’s met the horse has developed a connection and hope he has the chance to be reunited with his owners.

“It’s hard not to be in that situation and have a bond.” Fleury said. “He’s probably distressed confused and for him to be able to go home would be awesome.”

The people involved in the collision weren’t hurt.
