WINNIPEG – For the first time in its five years, the Manitoba Filipino Street Festival takes over downtown Winnipeg.

Moved from its original location in Garden City, the festival took over the front lawn of the Manitoba Legislature and beyond. With a parade and street dancing kicking it off. Shutting down the areas around Broadway and Memorial Boulevard.

The parade started on Memorial then looped onto York Ave., Carlton St. before heading back to the Legislative Building grounds on Broadway.

The event showcased the biggest and brightest talents to hit Manitoba’s Filipino community. A Filipino community that’s one of the largest in the world, outside of the Phillipines.

Roughly 8,000 people were expected to attend this year’s event while Filipino organizations from as far away as Calgary and Brandon participated. Organizers say the turnout was one of the largest yet.

The parade and street festival are meant to showcase Filipino culture and customs.

The parade started at 9 a.m. and continued throughout the day, with traditional food being smelled throughout the streets, and colours and traditional outfits spotted around every corner.
