WINNIPEG – Winnipeg’s first ‘cat cafe’ is now open.

‘Fur Babies’ at 1099 Kingsbury Ave. opened its doors for the first time on Saturday.

It costs $10 to go inside where customers can interact with the 11 cats that currently live there and also have a snack or beverage.

“To have an availability to come here and actually hold a kitten again and to pet it, it just excites me. I’m so happy that they opened the place up, said Elicce Mundy, one of the first customers to visit the cafe.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The cafe functions as a place to connect stray cats with new homes, said owner Jennifer Laferriere.

“We’re mostly an adoption centre. We foster these cats and we try to find them homes,” she said.

The cats at Fur Babies come from Ksen’s Kittens, a local non-profit stray and feral cat fostering organization.

“It’s a chance for the public to be able to come in and get to meet them and get to know their personalities instead of just seeing a picture,” said Michelle Ashcroft with Ksen’s Kitens.

Laferriere isn’t sure how many more cats she will be able to take on at the cafe, which is housed inside her dance studio.

However, she’s hopeful the cats that are living there will find homes quickly to make way for more.

“All of the cats are really beautiful so I think they’ll get homes quickly,” she said.

Laferriere is planning to hold a grand opening next month.
