Cargill building new canola refinery near Saskatoon

A new canola refinery plant is being built near Saskatoon.

Cargill says the world-class plant will be constructed at the site of its current crush facility in Clavet, just east of the city.

“[This facility] represents the first investment of this kind for Cargill in Canada and is one further step in the creation of Clavet as a major centre for value added processing,” said Gonzalo Petschen, president of the company’s dressing, sauces and oils division.

“This builds on the original vision of Clavet being an integrated canola processing hub for Cargill and for Saskatchewan,” added Ken Stone, commercial manager of grains and oilseeds.

The current plant, which was built in 1996 and expanded in 2009, is the largest canola processing facility in Canada.

Up to 30 additional jobs will be created at the plant, boosting employment to almost 200 people at the complex.

Cargill expects the refinery to begin operation in time for the 2014-15 canola harvest.
