Machete wielding suspects attack young man in Kelowna park

KELOWNA, B.C. – A 22-year-old Kelowna man is in hospital after sustaining what police say are serious, but non-life threatening injuries during an assault at Ben Lee Park.

The victim was allegedly kicked, punched and struck with machetes, according to RCMP.

It happened around midnight Monday on Leathead Rd where the victim was with a group when he was approached by two suspects.

Police believe the assault wasn’t random.

“RCMP believe that the victim was targeted by his attackers,” said Kelowna RCMP spokesperson Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey.

The first suspect is described by police as:

  • First Nations male;
  • Between 25 to 30 years of age;
  • Approx. 6’ tall;
  • Shaved head;
  • Heavy set;
  • Wearing a red shirt;

The second suspect is described by police as :

  • Caucasian male;
  • Shorter in height than suspect 1;
  • Between 25 to 30 years of age;
  • Skinny or slender build;
  • Wearing a sport jacket with grey and black sleeves and a baseball cap;

RCMP are looking for any additional witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of the alleged assault to contact the Kelowna RCMP detachment at 250-762-3300 or by leaving an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
