ASIRT investigating fatal collision in Cold Lake Saturday

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision in Cold Lake Saturday evening.

RCMP were called to a complaint of a fight between two men at a convenience store around 5:30 p.m.

One of the men was allegedly brandishing a knife and appeared to be intoxicated.

He drove away from the area in an SUV prior to an RCMP officer’s arrival.

The officer was able to locate the vehicle driving erratically on Highway 28 and activated emergency equipment in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver continued eastbound along 16 Ave. when the RCMP member briefly lost sight of the vehicle.

The SUV collided with a truck and ended up in the ditch.

The driver of the SUV was declared dead on scene. He’s been identified as a 36-year-old man from Cold Lake. The man’s name will not be released.

A man, woman and three-year-old child in the truck were taken to hospital and released with minor injuries.

RCMP continue to investigate the events related to the initial call at the convenience store and the conduct of the SUV driver.

ASIRT is investigating the circumstances surrounding the attempted vehicle stop and subsequent collision.

“In accordance to its mandate to effectively, independently, and objectively investigate incidents involving the serious injury or death of any person that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer,” RCMP said Sunday.
