Driver jailed for 15 months for hit-and-run death of teen in 2014

A 64-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 months in jail for the hit-and-run death of a teenage boy in Surrey in 2014.

Sixteen-year-old Kevin Dhillon was out for a motorcycle ride when he was hit by a car and left in the intersection to die.

It happened around 11 p.m. on June 25, 2014, at 96 Avenue and 123 A Street. Several witnesses told police they saw a silver Honda Accord with a demonstration plate D5 9840 travelling eastbound on 96 Avenue in the fast lane, signalling to turn left to go north on 123A Street. At that time, the motorcycle, travelling westbound on 96 Avenue through the intersection, collided with the Honda when the driver turned left in front of the motorcycle.

Police say the driver of the car, 64-year-old Balwinder Saggu, kept travelling north on 123A Street for one block before abandoning the car and fleeing on foot.

He had been facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death, but his guilty plea to a lesser charge of failure to remain at the scene allowed him to avoid a hit-and-run charge.

He has a long list of driving convictions and infractions, including impaired driving, dating back to 1991. He was not even supposed to be driving when the incident happened.

Saggu was sentenced to 18 months in jail, but three months was knocked off his sentence due to his poor health.

Dhillon’s father was too upset to talk to us on camera today but did say he is shocked his son’s life is only worth 15 months.
