Inmate found dead in cell at Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre

SASKATOON – Police are investigating after an inmate of the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre was found dead in his cell.

Elvis Percy Yee, also known as Elvis Percy Lachance, 28 years of age, was found in his cell just after 8:00 a.m. Thursday, police said in a news release.

The death is considered suspicious.

“This didn’t, at first glance, appear to us to be a natural death,” said Judy Orthner, spokeswoman for Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing.

“So, to make sure that was in fact the case – that it wasn’t a natural death – we’ve asked the Saskatoon police to investigate for us.”

The correctional centre is an all-male facility.

“The cell that the inmate was in was a remand unit. At the time, he was double-bunked with another inmate,” said Orthner.

The prison has been locked down and no visitors will be allowed except for legal and medical professionals until the investigation is done.

The move is for the safety and security of the other inmates and the staff, Orthner said.
