The Kelowna Fire Department (KFD) responded to a bush fire near UBC Okanagan in Kelowna on Friday afternoon.

Platoon Capt. Tim Light said the smouldering grass fire grew to about 200 feet by 80 feet and was quickly put out.

He said it was around 5:20 p.m. that a 911 call was made reporting a bush fire just below the residences in the university.

About 16 KFD members were at the scene to fight the blaze, wildfire service crews were not called in.

“When we got [there] the fire was about 110 [feet] by 110 [feet], probably a rank three so the guys hit it pretty hard right away,” Light said.

He added members would likely be staying on scene overnight to put out hot spots and to monitor the area.

“It’s a pretty heavily wooded area and the topography is not the best,” Light said.

Light also used the grass fire as an opportunity to remind the public of some preventative measures.

“If you’re hiking in the wilderness, always be careful of what you leave behind,” he said. “Dispose of all of your smoking material properly and responsibly.”

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
