Drivers in certain areas of downtown Calgary will soon have to start paying for on-street parking earlier than they used to.

The City of Calgary is changing the time when weekday payment becomes mandatory on some streets, moving it from 9 a.m. to 7 a.m.

The extended payment only applies to three parking areas – 4a, 4c and 4d – which stretch from 9 Avenue S.W. north to 3 Avenue S.W., and 8 Street S.W. to 1 Street S.E.

The pricing areas (4a, 4c and 4d) where on-street parking in downtown Calgary will begin at 7 a.m., starting Aug. 1, 2016.

The change was approved by city council on June 6. It technically goes into effect starting on Aug. 1. However, as Aug. 1 is a statutory holiday, no payment is required for on-street parking on that day. The Calgary Parking Authority said there will be a one-week grace period before drivers are ticketed for not paying.

According to a release on the Calgary Parking Authority’s website, this is the first time new paid parking periods have been introduced since May 2013.

Mandatory weekday payment in the impacted areas will continue to end at 6 p.m.

Weekend payment schedules remain unchanged.
