WINNIPEG — It started with a 2014 campaign promise from Mayor Brian Bowman, and now the site for an off-leash dog park in downtown Winnipeg is officially selected.

A portion of Bonnycastle Park on Assiniboine Avenue has been chosen as the site for the dog park.

Mayor Brian Bowman announced the location Friday.

“The selection of Bonnycastle Park brings us one step closer to the fulfillment of my commitment to open a fenced in, off-leash dog park in Downtown Winnipeg,” Mayor Brian Bowman said.

The new 0.15 hectare park will feature a perimeter fence along with an internal fence to separate small dogs from larger dogs.

The park also has lights, signage, park furniture for people and waste receptacles. A granular path along the interior of the fence and tree and shrub planting around the edge of the new off-leash enclosure will complete the design.

The $300,000 dog park was approved as part of the 2015 operating budget.

Seven sites in the city’s core were considered for the dog park. Based on public feedback and operational requirements, the portion of Bonnycastle Park was selected as the “optimal location within a city greenspace,” the city said.

The city says having such a space would encourage downtown living and help downtown residents who already own a dog.

Once a contractor has been selected, construction of the new dog park is expected to begin around the end of September or beginning of October, and will continue for three to four weeks.
