The Husky Energy oil spill is being called an environmental disaster. Last Thursday, between 200,000 and 250,000 litres of crude oil and other material leaked from a Husky Energy pipeline near Maidstone, Sask. into the North Saskatchewan River.

Initial efforts to contain the spill using booms were unsuccessful, and the oil is expected to reach Prince Albert on Monday.

Many have been looking for comments from Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall, who is known for his support of pipelines. While at the premiers meeting last week, Wall said while an oil spill was not something anyone wanted to see, his support for the infrastructure continues.
“The facts remain that if we’re not moving by a pipeline, it’s going to move … (by rail),” Wall said. “We know that rail is actually more susceptible to spills and spills are often more intense.”
However as images of oil slicken birds start to make the round on social media, it begs the question: what impact will the Husky oil spill have on public perception of pipelines?
