One man is dead and another seriously hurt after the 48th shooting in Surrey this year.

“We heard loud, six or seven shots,” said neighbour Jas Muker. “Then the car ran away from us.”

It happened in the driveway of a home on 90A Avenue, at around approximately 10:20 p.m. last night.

When police arrived, they found two people with gunshot wounds. Both were taken to hospital, but one did not survive their injuries.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Muker says the surviving victim is believed to be a resident of the home. One of three sons he watched grow up in the neighbourhood.

“Never had a problem, fighting or anything, absolutely nothing,” he said of the victim. “He’s a good kid.”

Others say the home was the subject of several noise complaints because of loud parties late into the night. Still, residents who have lived on the cul-de-sac street for more than 20 years say nothing like this has ever happened before.

“Glass isn’t going to stop a bullet,” said Tom Fisher, who lives a few houses down.

With many children living in the area, people are asking the parents of those involved to help police end the violence.

“As a parent, if we help the police, we see something happening and help report it,” said Muker. “Come forward, don’t be scared.”

The scene has been taken over by the Integrated Homicide Investigations Team. Officers were on scene last night and this morning gathering evidence.

Anyone with information who has not spoken with police is asked to call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers.
