Munich shooting: Bavarians in Calgary shocked by rampage

Friday’s deadly shooting rampage in the German city of Munich stunned some natives of that city who are spending the summer in Calgary.

“I grew up going there everyday so it’s very hard to see it — like where you grew up,” Patricia Sigl said of the Olympia shopping centre where at least nine people were killed and 16 more were injured after at least one gunman opened fire.

Sigl is working at the deli counter at Edelweiss Village in northwest Calgary for the summer. She told Global News she barely made it through her shift after hearing the news.

“I was not only shocked, I was terrified, I was out of my mind so my thoughts were, ‘I have to go home to see my family,'” Sigl said.

Daniel Neumaier is also from Munich and working at Wurst for the summer, a German-style restaurant in Mission. He said the news of the attack hit him hard as well.

“I am pretty sad,” he said. “I am glad to be safe here but I have to contact some friends and my family for sure.”

“It happens and it can happen anytime – that’s what our government says to us,” Neumaier said.
