Man charged after pedestrian struck and killed in north Edmonton parking lot

A 78-year-old man has been charged after a 50-year-old woman was struck and killed in a north Edmonton parking lot earlier this month.

Ahmad Farhat was charged with driving carelessly under the Traffic Safety Act after the female pedestrian died in hospital after she was struck in a parking lot in the area of 135 Street and 137 Avenue.

At around 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, a 32-year-old woman driving a Ford Escape stopped at a five-way stop in the parking lot to allow the woman to cross the street.

At the same time, a man drove his Kia Sportage through the intersection, hitting the Escape from behind. The impact forced the Kia across a curb and rock median when it struck and drove over the pedestrian, police said.

The 50-year-old woman was treated by EMS on scene and taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said speed and alcohol were not factors.
