A group working to build the Okanagan Rail Trail has seen a huge spike in financial support. Over three days, 153 donations came in totaling $32,000 after an anonymous donor announced they are willing to match donations of up to $50,000 to support the cause.

Once the unknown benefactor learned of how successful the campaign was, they decided to maintain the momentum by increasing the matching funds to $100,000 if the original goal of $50,000 is met.
“When I got the update on how well the matching donations have been coming in I thought I couldn’t ask for a better Canada Day,” said the anonymous donor in a press release.

The group said every $160 funds a meter of trail construction, adding the matching program has the opportunity to fund 1,250 metres.
“If our communities can rise to this challenge, we can fund over a km of trail by working with our matching donor. We need to encourage our friends, family, neighbours and co-coworkers to ensure make a donation in the next few days,” said Duane Thomson, a trail ambassador.
The campaign started July 1 and will run until Sunday, July 10.
